Bible Passage: Prov 2: 1-15

Key Verse:       Prov 2: 6 For the Lord gives wisdom, and from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.

Session Focus: We are called to listen for God's wisdom and to accept its benefits.

Prov 2:1-15

1My son, if you accept my words and store up my commands within you, 2turning your ear to wisdom and applying your heart to understanding, 3and if you call out for insight and cry aloud for understanding, 4and if you look for it as for silver and search for it as for hidden treasure, 5then you will understand the fear of the LORD and find the knowledge of God. 6For the LORD gives wisdom, and from his mouth come knowledge and understanding. 7He holds victory in store for the upright, he is a shield to those whose walk is blameless, 8for he guards the course of the just and protects the way of his faithful ones. 9Then you will understand what is right and just and fair--every good path. 10For wisdom will enter your heart, and knowledge will be pleasant to your soul. 11Discretion will protect you, and understanding will guard you. 12Wisdom will save you from the ways of wicked men, from men whose words are perverse, 13who leave the straight paths to walk in dark ways, 14who delight in doing wrong and rejoice in the perverseness of evil, 15whose paths are crooked and who are devious in their ways.

Prov. 8:11

"for wisdom is more precious than rubies, and nothing you desire can compare with her."

Proverbs 11:17 further states concerning wisdom - "I love those who love me, and those who seek me find me." In verses 32-35, "blesseed are those who keep my ways. Listen to my instruction and be wise; do not ignore it. Blessed is the man who listens to me,...For whoever finds me finds life and receives favor from the LORD." "Instruct a wise man and he will be wiser still; teach a righteous man and he will add to his learning. The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding." (9:9,10)"If you are wise, your wisdom will reward you" (9:12) "With humility comes wisdom" (11:2b) "The fear of the LORD teaches a man wisdom, and humility comes before honor." (15:33) And what will come of my desires? Prov. 11:14 states that "The desire of the righteous ends only in good."

What is Wisdom? RESPONSES -------

James 3:17 But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere.

So, how is this wisdom developed within our lives?

Wisdom to me is when the mind of a person is in subjection to their heart which has yielded its will to Christ. To be led by God's Spirit and not our own wills is Wisdom. Romans 8:14 because those who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.

Which must be why that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.

Proverbs 9:10 "The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.

And to be able to follow the Spirit takes a listening heart. Isaiah 51:1 "Listen to me, you who pursue righteousness and who seek the LORD: Look to the rock from which you were cut and to the quarry from which you were hewn;

The mind is to our soul as our ears are to our brain. Just as we must be careful to what we listen to with our ears lest what we hear negatively impacts our thinking; so we must be careful to what we listen to with our minds. Are we feeding it God's Word or the World's opinions? God's Word has lasted for ever and will last for ever and has changed countless people's lives. The world's opinions are as numberless as the grains of sand on this planet and has not produced one bit of eternal fruit in people's lives. And, are we doing more with God's Word than merely feeding upon it with our minds? If not, we'll be like the following; 2 Timothy 3:7 always learning but never able to acknowledge the truth. We must allow God's Word to affect our wills for if we don't, we will become like gods unto ourselves full of pride due to the knowledge of God's Word without the wisdom thereof. So, are we listening to it with our hearts? For just as the ear alone does not decipher the sounds that are brought into it but the brain does, so our mind to hear and grow in wisdom must not rely on itself to decipher what it's reading or seeing, but allow the Holy Spirit in our hearts to. Just as water will transform a mountain of solid rock into grains of sand over time, so God's Word which is purer than the most pure water will transform our hearts into His image as we continue to take it in into our hungry hearts. And just as the type of rock a mountain is made of will determine the speed of it's transformation into sand, so will the attitude of our hearts determine the speed by which God's Word will impact our lives.

May we ever learn how to more completely submit our wills to His so that His Wisdom may ever flow from our lives to bring His Life to others; Isaiah 64:8 Yet, O LORD, you are our Father. We are the clay, you are the potter; we are all the work of your hand.
