Main thought: To examine the similarities of Chess and our lives

The Chess Game of Life

Eph 6:12 - Show Context For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.

The more I walk down this pilgrimage of life, the more it appears to me like a game of chess. And, just as it is in chess where there are many different players with each player having different capabilities and limitations, so there is in this life; Ro 12:4&5 - Show Context For as we have many members in one body, but all the members do not have the same function, so we, being many, are one body in Christ, and individually members of one another. The whole goal of chess is to capture the king and in our lives it should be just the same but where He captures us. The following parable depicts this truth as well as the fact that we’re all given different talents and gifts. But, our reward is not in those talents and gifts but how we use them for His Glory; Luke 19:11-27 11 While they were listening to these things, Jesus went on to tell a parable, because He R806 was near Jerusalem, and they supposed that the R807 kingdom of God was going to appear immediately. 12 So He said, "A R808 nobleman went to a distant country to receive a kingdom for himself, and then return. 13 "And he called ten of his slaves, and gave them ten minas F415 and said to them, `Do business with this until F416 I come back.' 14 "But his citizens hated him and sent a F417 delegation after him, saying, `We do not want this man to reign over us.' 15 "When he returned, after receiving the kingdom, he ordered that these slaves, to whom he had given the money, be called to him so that he might know what business they had done. 16 "The first appeared, saying, `Master, F418 your mina F419 has made ten minas more.' 17 "And he said to him, `Well done, good slave, because you have been faithful R809 in a very little thing, you are to be in authority over ten cities.' 18 "The second came, saying, `Your mina, F420 master, F421 has made five minas.' 19 "And he said to him also, `And you are to be over five cities.' 20 "Another came, saying, `Master, here is your mina, which I kept put away in a handkerchief; 21 for I was afraid of you, because you are an exacting man; you take up what you did not lay down and reap what you did not sow.' 22 "He said to him, `By F422 your own words I will judge you, you worthless slave. Did you know that I am an exacting man, taking up what I did not lay down and reaping what I did not sow? 23 `Then why did you not put my money in the bank, and having come, I would have collected it with interest?' 24 "Then he said to the bystanders, `Take the mina away from him and give it to the one who has the ten minas.' 25 "And they said to him, `Master, he has ten minas already.' 26 "I R810 tell you that to everyone who has, more shall be given, but from the one who does not have, even what he does have shall be taken away. 27 "But these R811 enemies of mine, who did not want me to reign over them, bring them here and slay R812 them in my presence."

The world says whoever has the most toys when they die wins and God says, whoever has my Son in his heart wins; Col 1:27 - Show Context To them God willed to make known what are the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles: which is Christ in you, the hope of glory. Just as satan lied to the servants in the parable who were given gifts to honor the one who gave them, so he is lying to people today that they don’t need to serve anybody but themselves. How true God’s Word is that we wrestle or war not against flesh and blood. We are merely the pieces of the game of this life and those that work to be the ones to guide and direct us are God and satan; Ro 6:16 - Show Context Do you not know that to whom you present yourselves slaves to obey, you are that one's slaves whom you obey, whether of sin leading to death, or of obedience leading to righteousness? Those who may ask, “Why must we serve one of them when we can choose to serve ourselves?” For the same reason that we did not will ourselves into existence for each one of us were created for a purpose which is beyond what the eyes and ears of man can see or hear or the mind of man to comprehend.  We have no more power over our destiny than we had over our birth. We can think and do anything we desire but the One who determines where we spend eternity is not ourselves. We can no more will ourselves out of the pits of hell as we can will ourselves into the gates of Heaven. God has given us the choice to choose one of two paths, to follow His Son or ourselves. To submit ourselves to the Son will result in the covering of Christ when we stand before the Father. To submit ourselves to our own selfish desires and prideful ways is to choose God’s anger and wrath, which I believe the parable portrays very clearly.

Just as it is chess, where sometimes a piece needs to be sacrificed to win the game, so it is in life where Christ had to be sacrificed to win the battle. John 12:24-26  24 "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless R801 a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. 25 "He R802 who loves his life F142 loses it, and he who hates R803 his life F142 in this world will keep it to life eternal. 26 "If anyone serves F143 Me, he must follow Me; and where R804 I am, there My servant will be also; if anyone serves F143 Me, the Father will honor R805 him.

Also, in chess, have you ever made a move and just as you had removed your fingers you saw that you blew it and immediately reached for it before your opponent reached for theirs? Now this is very good to be so quick because technically as soon as you removed your fingers the play belongs to the opponent, BUT, because you saw your mistake before your opponent had the opportunity to move, that gives you a bit more grace for your opponent to allow you to change your move. It was a good thing that the Olympic committee recently allowed an American to keep his gold medal because he was actually allowed to finish his routine and be judged before the errors of the judges were found on a previous routine on a different opponent. God is all for being fair which is why He tells us in His Word; Proverbs 6:1-5 1 My son, if you have become surety R216 for your neighbor, Have given F44 a pledge for a stranger, 2 {If} you have been snared with the words of your mouth, Have been caught with the words of your mouth,  3 Do this then, my son, and deliver yourself; Since you have come into the hand F45 of your neighbor, Go, humble yourself, and importune your neighbor.  4 Give no sleep R217 to your eyes, Nor slumber to your eyelids;  5 Deliver yourself like a gazelle from {the hunter's} hand And like a bird R218 from the hand of the fowler. And another one for being quick to repent from an incorrect move is in Matthew 5:21-23 23 Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath ought against thee; 24 Leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift.  25 Agree with thine adversary quickly, whiles thou art in the way with him; lest at any time the adversary deliver thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and thou be cast into prison. 26 Verily I say unto thee, Thou shalt by no means come out thence, till thou hast paid the uttermost farthing.

How important it is in chess and in life to be careful with each move we make. Why, because each one of us are accountable and will be rewarded or punished in direct relationship with how and why we’ve made each and every choice. Why we do a certain task, think a certain thought, speak a certain word, all will have their results; Ga 6:7 - Show Context Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, this he will also reap. This is why it is so important to lean very intensely upon God and be very careful to move in harmony with His Spirit; 1Co 3:10 - Show Context According to the grace of God which was given to me, like a wise master builder I laid a foundation, and another is building on it. But each man must be careful how he builds on it. And how can we be careful to build our lives or make our moves correctly, by first realizing that we cannot do, say, or think anything of value apart from His Spirit; Zec 4:6 - Show Context Then he said to me, "This is the word of the LORD to Zerubbabel saying, ' Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit,' says the LORD of hosts. And, the sooner we realize that our success at this game of life is won through our surrender to His will, the sooner God can direct us where ever His heart desires; Pr 21:1 - Show Context The king's heart is in the hand of the Lord, Like the rivers of water; He turns it wherever He wishes. And, since God is able to direct the heart of kings that don’t even know Him, how much more can He direct the hearts of those who are children of the King of kings and Lord of lords? Romans 8:12-1412 Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh.  13 For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.  14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.

And just as Christ had to overcome the flesh’s desire to save itself, so we too must learn to lay our will at His feet, just as He laid His at His Father’s feet; Lu 22:42 - Show Context saying, "Father, if You are willing, remove this cup from Me; yet not My will, but Yours be done."  To those who choose to harden their hearts and refuse His Mercy and Wisdom, only the wrath of God awaits them.

God in His Love and Mercy created us with the option to choose. We can choose to;

1.)    Listen to Him and harden our hearts, which will result in His wrath

2.)    Ignore What He is saying, which will result in His wrath

3.)    Listen and receive His Gift of Life which will result in Life with Him

Now the question remains, do you want to be a winner of Life? Receive the greatest gift of all time in God’s Son and LIVE! Eph 6:10 - Show Context Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might. Why?, Because; Ps 100:3 - Show Context Know ye that the LORD he is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.

Heavenly Father, Help us look beyond ourselves into the reality of our existence and our need to surrender our pride to You. Father, who doesn’t want to be a winner? Teach us how to spend time listening to Your voice that you may ever transform us into the image of Your Son, the Greatest Winner of all time! In Jesus, Eternal, Glorious Name, Amen
