God's Questions and Job's Response

Bible Passage:           Job 38:1-7; 42:1-6,10

Key Verse:                Job 42:1-2

Session Focus:          To learn the Blessings of standing by faith while everything is falling around us.

Job's request for God to answer him; Job 31:35 35("Oh, that I had someone to hear me! I sign now my defense--let the Almighty answer me; let my accuser put his indictment in writing.

Job 38:1-7 1Then the LORD answered Job out of the storm. He said: 2"Who is this that darkens my counsel with words without knowledge? 3Brace yourself like a man; I will question you, and you shall answer me. 4"Where were you when I laid the earth's foundation? Tell me, if you understand. 5Who marked off its dimensions? Surely you know! Who stretched a measuring line across it? 6On what were its footings set, or who laid its cornerstone-- 7while the morning stars sang together and all the angels [1] shouted for joy?

Job 42:1-6,10 1Then Job replied to the LORD: 2"I know that you can do all things; no plan of yours can be thwarted. 3[You asked,] `Who is this that obscures my counsel without knowledge?' Surely I spoke of things I did not understand, things too wonderful for me to know. 4["You said,] `Listen now, and I will speak; I will question you, and you shall answer me.' 5My ears had heard of you but now my eyes have seen you. 6Therefore I despise myself and repent in dust and ashes."

10After Job had prayed for his friends, the LORD made him prosperous again and gave him twice as much as he had before.

Have you ever had trials that are so painful so heart wrenching it feels like it takes everything you can do just to hang on? Like a row boat in a terrible storm where you have no ability to row due to the storm and so you find that all you can do is hang on and pray.

Most of us have and for those of us who have, we can understand Job's questioning God to the point of wondering if God truly knows what is going on. Trials seem to bring to the surface any and all of the dross, that which has no value, to the surface of our lives as it was in Job's life even though sin did not lead him into this terrible place of pain, God allowed it to make Job's Faith even greater. I Peter 1:1-7 6In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials. 7. These have come so that your faith--of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire--may be proved genuine and may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed. 8Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy, 9for you are receiving the goal of your faith, the salvation of your souls.

Verse 7 above states that faith is of greater value even than that of gold which even though it too is put to the test will perish but not faith. Faith when tried gets stronger while gold even though refined by fire will eventually perish. And just as there is a temporary financial reward that also perishes when you bring in gold to be redeemed, so will there be and everlasting eternal reward that will never perish for those who have grown strong in the realms of faith in Christ. Obedience to God's Word is what develops and continues to develop faith within our lives. From faith to faith His righteousness is revealed. Romans 1:17 For in the gospel a righteousness from God is revealed, a righteousness that is by faith from first to last, [1] just as it is written: "The righteous will live by faith." [2]

1.17 Or is from faith to faith

2.17 Hab. 2:4

Faith is something that we can develop and increase within our lives depending on how much we desire to walk in obedience to God's Word. I believe that the only ones who limit God is ourselves. But if we are willing to try God and put Him to the test by learning how to do His Word, His Word will do great and mighty things within our lives.

What can we do to help us so that we may have that anchor of our souls which is necessary to stand strong against such terrible trials? Eph 6:10-18 10Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes. 12For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. 13Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. 14Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, 15and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. 16In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. 18And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints.

We cannot go through terrible storms apart from being clothed within God's armor and hope to come through stronger instead of weaker. Spiritual strength comes from learning how to die to ourselves and live unto Christ. It comes from learning how to be still and listen to God's voice instead of our own. It comes from learning how to persevere through tribulation by focusing on Him and not the waves that are surrounding us.

One of the greatest scriptures of Truth that has carried me through some of my darkest hours is the one that states in Psalms 37:4 Delight yourself in the LORD and he will give you the desires of your heart. If there's one thing we learn in this life it is that God is true to His Word. God will perfect His Will in our lives; (Ps 138:8 The LORD will perfect that which concerneth me: thy mercy, O LORD, endureth for ever: forsake not the works of thine own hands.); as we learn obedience to it above everything else. Among the things that please our Lord is perseverance. The Lord blessed Jacob because of his perseverance. Perseverance means continuing on even when you don't feel like it. Something other than your flesh takes over and tells us to hang on. Hebrews 13:15 Through Jesus, therefore, let us continually offer to God a sacrifice of praise--the fruit of lips that confess his name. For those that learn how to praise Him when their heart hurts and weeps with many tears, God will not allow to go long without His intervention. God is true to Himself and when we determine within ourselves to obey His Word, He will perform it!

May we daily learn the joys of hanging on and praising Him amidst the thick and the thin so that Faith which is more valuable than gold will continue to grow in our lives unto His Glory, Honor, and Praise!
